Experience Overview
Escape the city and experience an exhilarating guided quad bike ride through the breathtaking Atlantis Dunes (Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve), located just 45 minutes from the center of Cape Town. Spanning 27 square kilometers of pure, brilliant white sand dunes—some scaling as high as a six-story building—this striking landscape vividly mirrors the iconic open dunes of the Namibian desert.
The quad bikes provided are stable, semi-automatic, and extremely easy to operate. Because the driver only needs to manage the steering, gas, and brakes, even absolute beginners can comfortably master the controls within about 10 minutes. Guided tracks are tailored to match the collective skill level of the group, ensuring everyone rides at a safe and enjoyable pace.
The experience includes a stop at the viewpoint during your ride, where you will have an opportunity to take some photos.
Critical Arrival & Logistical Instructions
- Arrival Notice: You are required to arrive at the venue strictly 30 minutes prior to your scheduled slot. This buffer is essential to handle mandatory check-in steps, including completing indemnity waivers, conducting safety briefings, and fitting helmets. For example, if your session is booked for 10:00 AM, you must be on-site and ready by 9:30 AM.
- Location Warning: Self-drive clients must go straight to the reserve. Do not go to Maitland / Cape Xtreme's offices. You will be at the wrong location and you will miss your booking/forfeit your booking entirely (no refund/reschedule).
- Group Size Note: Group sizes normally range from 2 to 15 people per session for safety reasons. Bigger groups will be accompanied by additional guides or separated into multiple rotating sessions - this is highly dependent on the number of daily entry permits available. This is a public group activity, not a private tour.
- Time Slot Availability: Your selected time slot is a preference and is not guaranteed at the time of submission. Once we receive your request/booking, we will check availability and confirm your slot. We will either send over your official confirmation or immediately contact you with alternative times or dates if your preferred slot is not available.
Inclusions & Exclusions
- ✅ What’s Included: Safety briefing & instruction, reliable and easy to operate Quad Bike & fuel, professional and highly experienced guides, helmets in multiple sizes, and hair nets for use in helmets. Goggles (R50 pp) and buffs (R100 pp) are available on request and subject to availability.
- ❎ What’s Excluded: Round-trip transport (hotel pickup & drop off), meals, snacks, refreshments, all items of a personal nature and the mandatory reserve entry permit/conservation fee of R300 per person (which is calculated and added during checkout).
What to Wear & Bring
- Clothing: Comfortable apparel and a warm jacket or windbreaker (especially in winter or wet conditions). It is highly advised to wear quick-dry or waterproof clothes if rain is forecasted.
- Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are strictly required.
- Sun Protection: Sunblock and sunglasses are crucial for blocking the intense glare of the white sand dunes.
- Hydration: Bring a minimum of 1 Liter of water per person. The dunes get exceptionally hot, particularly in the summer months.
- Facilities: There are no shops or convenience stores at the dunes, only public toilets. Because the on-site restrooms are basic, it is recommended to use the facilities at your hotel or a local petrol station before arriving.
- Spectators: Only paying participants are permitted in the quad activity zones; non-riding spectators are not allowed to follow the group.
Safety Rules & Participant Requirements
To ensure a secure, safe and legal operation within the nature reserve, the following strict regulations apply:
- Identification (Mandatory): Every single guest must carry an official physical passport or ID book/card (or a perfectly clear photo/copy of it). The nature reserve authorities will deny access to anyone without identification, resulting in a completely forfeited booking without a refund.
- Indemnity Waivers: All participants must sign on-site safety waivers (one for the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve and one for the Quad Bike operators) to partake in the activity. Guests under 18 years old require a parent or legal guardian to sign on their behalf.
- Age Limits:
- To Ride Individually: Minimum 13 years old.
- Ride-Alongs (Ages 4–12): Children in this age bracket cannot drive; they must be booked as ride-alongs seated with a parent or a professional guide. This requires a 1:1 adult-to-child ratio. Kids-only groups under 13 cannot be accommodated, and any children joining must be disclosed prior to arrival. The guide reserves the right to change ride-along arrangements in the interests of client safety.
- Under 4 Years: Children under 4 are too small to participate.
- Weight Limit & Fitness: Maximum weight capacity per quad bike is 130–150 kg. An average physical fitness level is required.
- Pregnancy Policy: Due to the bumpy, undulating nature of riding over desert sand terrain, pregnant individuals are strictly not permitted to participate.

Late Arrival & No Show Policy (Please Read)
The Quad Biking schedule is extremely strict, especially during peak season and weekends. Timeliness is critical. Please understand that permits, quads and guides are booked for you and if you don't show up on time there is no one else that we can fit in on short notice.
- Lateness Consequences:
Travel Time: | Allow extra travel time for unforeseen delays. |
Failure to Arrive on Time: | You risk paying a late arrival penalty (R250 pp), losing ride time, or missing/forfeiting your experience COMPLETELY (resulting in a 'No Show'). |
NO REFUND/NO RESCHEDULE: | LATE ARRIVALS OR NO SHOWS FORFEIT THE BOOKING, and the full cancellation policy applies. We cannot hold back the group/other guests or the rest of the day for you. |
- Late Arrival Penalty (Applies if you are later than your required meeting/arrival time)
Fee: | R250 PER PERSON will be charged. |
Reason: | This fee covers special provisions needed to fit you in outside the original scheduled time slot (admin, briefing, helmet fitting, etc.). |
Note: | Please note this is not always easy or might not be possible as quad biking may be very busy or already fully booked, and you will then just have to wait and be patient to be helped. |
| Refusal to Pay: | If you refuse to pay the penalty fee and/or wait to be assisted on another slot (IF possible/available), the booking will be treated as a NO SHOW and forfeited (no refund/reschedule) |
Weather & Dune Conditions Policy
Our Quad Biking is an all-weather activity, and operates in various weather conditions, including rain. Our policy regarding weather conditions is as follows:
- Quad Biking is Not Weather-Dependent: Our quad biking experiences continue as usual in rain. Wet conditions can enhance the adventure, making the experience even more thrilling. No cancellations or refunds will be issued due to rain.
- Extreme Weather Conditions: In the case of extreme weather conditions that pose a safety risk (such as severe storms, heavy downpours, flooding, or lightning), we reserve the right to cancel the activity. If we have to cancel due to extreme weather, participants will be contacted and given the option to reschedule their booking to a different date or be refunded.
- Customer Responsibility: It is the client’s own responsibility to check weather conditions before their booking. Participants are advised to dress appropriately for weather conditions, including wearing waterproof or quick-dry clothing. Cape Xtreme Adventure Tours and our Quad Biking guides/operators are not responsible for any discomfort caused by wet or muddy conditions.
Damages Policy
Should you (the client) damage a quad bike by driving into another quad bike or obstruction or ‘roll-it’, you shall be held liable and be required to pay for the damages as determined by the guide on duty before you leave the activity area. Should there be a dispute between the 2 parties, the hirer of the equipment shall nonetheless pay for the damages before leaving the activity area. The owners of the quad bikes will provide invoices for the replacement parts and labour with-in 14 days and provide the hirer a refund if damages claimed is more than then damage sustained.
