No Experience? No Problem! Whether you've shredded snow before or never touched a board, our guides will start you with the basics. We'll cover everything from finding your balance to mastering your stance. You'll be amazed at how quickly you pick it up!

After a quick safety briefing upon arrival, the real fun begins. You'll progress to cruising and carving down the slopes at speeds that will definitely get your heart racing. Prepare for the exhilarating rush as you zoom down the dunes!The Atlantis Dunes offer an incredible backdrop for a truly unique and memorable day out. This is your chance to step outside the box and try a totally different kind of board sport!

Critical Arrival & Logistical Instructions

• Arrival Notice: If you are self drive (excluding transport) you are required to arrive at the venue strictly 30 minutes prior to your start time. This buffer is essential to handle mandatory check-in steps, including completing indemnity waivers, purchasing entry permits, conducting safety briefings, and heading onto the dunes. For example, if your session is booked to start at 8:30 AM, you must be on-site and ready by 8:00 AM.
• Location Warning: Self-drive clients must go straight to the reserve. Do not go to Maitland / Cape Xtreme's offices. You will be at the wrong location and you will miss your booking/forfeit your booking entirely (no refund/reschedule).

Inclusions & Exclusions

• ✅ What’s Included: Round-trip transport if transported option was paid for (hotel pickup & drop off), safety briefing & instruction, sandboard equipment, professional guide/instructor, a water (500ml) & a chocolate bar per person.
• ❎ What’s Excluded: Round-trip transport if self-drive option was chosen (hotel pickup & drop off), meals, extra snacks, extra refreshments, all items of a personal nature and the mandatory reserve entry permit/conservation fee of R96 per person (which is calculated and added during checkout).

What to Wear & Bring

• Clothing: Comfortable sportswear is highly recommended. In winter or overcast weather, bring a warm jacket, windbreaker, or rain gear.
• Footwear: Closed-toe shoes and long, thick socks are required for the board bindings. While the actual boarding is often done in socks or barefoot, the midday sand can burn; always keep a pair of light shoes or flip-flops nearby to walk comfortably between runs.
• Sun Protection: High-SPF sunblock, a hat, and polarized sunglasses are absolutely vital to defend against intense direct sunlight and the extreme sand glare.
• Hydration: Bring at least 1 Liter of water per person. Physical exertion combined with dry desert-like heat makes staying hydrated critical.
• Facilities: There are no shops or convenience stores at the dunes, only public toilets. Because the on-site restrooms are basic, it is recommended to use the facilities at your hotel or a local petrol station before arriving.
• Spectators: Non-riding guests who wish to accompany you to watch the sandboarding portion are welcome at a fee of R120 per person (prior notice required).

Sun Exposure & Optimal Start Times

The Atlantis Dunes are a pristine white-sand environment that reflects sunlight that creates a glare and high heat.

• Beating the Heat: The dunes offer no natural shade. In the peak of summer, surface temperatures on the sand become very hot.
• Peak Season/Crowded Days: Atlantis is a popular destination for sandboarding, quad biking and 4x4 's. Starting early/first thing in the morning (we normally only operate in the mornings) ensures you get the "fresh" untouched dunes before the crowds arrive.
• Recommended Timing: We strongly recommend an early morning start (typically between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM, especiallu/mainly in summer). This allows you to enjoy the activity in cooler temperatures and ensures a more serene experience before the rush.

Safety Rules & Participant Requirements

To ensure a secure, safe and legal operation within the nature reserve, the following strict regulations apply:

• Identification (Mandatory): Every single guest must carry an official physical passport or ID book/card (or a perfectly clear photo/copy of it). The nature reserve authorities will deny access to anyone without identification, resulting in a completely forfeited booking without a refund.
• Indemnity Waivers: All participants must sign on-site safety waivers (one for the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve and one for the Sandboarding) to partake in the activity. Guests under 18 years old require a parent or legal guardian to sign on their behalf.
• Age Limits: The minimum age to participate is 8 years old.
• Fitness Level: An average level of physical fitness is required to walk up and ride down the sand slopes.
• Pregnancy Policy: Due to the physical exertion and potential falls associated with boarding down steep dunes, expectant mothers are strictly prohibited from participating.

• Prohibited Items & Conduct:
  • Safety: No person under the influence/suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal substances will be allowed to participate. No alcohol or illegal substances may be brought into the reserve.
  • Food: No loose food items shall be allowed on the trip.
• Environmental Responsibility:
  • Nature Reserve: The dunes are part of the City of Cape Town’s Biodiversity Network. Please do not litter.
  • Best Practice: Implement best-practice principles: save energy, save water, reduce waste, and protect biodiversity.
  • Sandboards: We have a good amount of boards we rotate and we don’t always take a sandboard per person due to efforts to minimize the effect on the dunes (environmentally) as well as for safety reasons.

Late Arrival & No Show Policy (Please Read)

The Sandboarding schedule is extremely strict, especially during peak season and weekends. Timeliness is critical. Please understand that permits, boards and guide(s) are booked for you and if you don't show up on time there is no one else that we can fit in on short notice.

• Transit & Travel Time Guidelines:
  • Self-Drive Guests: Please factor in additional driving time to account for potential traffic or unexpected delays along the route.
  • Transported Guests: Your actual pickup time may fluctuate by roughly 10 to 15 minutes due to local traffic conditions. We ask that you be ready and waiting at your designated collection point ahead of time. Because our drivers must keep other tour groups on schedule, the vehicle can wait for a maximum of 10 minutes before departing. Missing this window will result in a forfeited booking classified as a non-refundable no-show.
• Failure to Arrive on Time: You risk losing activity time, or missing/forfeiting your experience COMPLETELY (resulting in a 'No Show').
• Lateness Consequences: LATE ARRIVALS OR NO SHOWS FORFEIT THE BOOKING, and the full cancellation policy applies. We cannot hold back the group/other guests or the rest of the day for you.

Weather & Dune Conditions Policy

Sand Texture & Moisture Dependency
Unlike other all-weather activities, sandboarding is highly dependent on sand texture and moisture levels. Trillions of abrasive, friction-building granules must interact cleanly with the slick base of the sandboard to allow for smooth movement.

Because sand conditions can change rapidly based on the cumulative amount of local rainfall, the viability of the dunes can often only be assessed in person on the actual day of the activity by your guide.

• Heavy Sychronized Rainfall: Sandboarding cannot operate during heavy, active storms or if the dunes are deeply saturated from continuous or heavy overnight rain.
• The Layer of Dampness Exception: Please note that slightly damp sand or sand that is dry on the surface but wet underneath can sometimes cause the board to grab or experience resistance. However, even with a thin layer of dampness on the dunes, sandboarding is frequently still possible and a run will always be actively attempted.

A Note on Patience: Letting the Sun Do Its Magic
We kindly ask our guests to pack a sense of adventure and a little bit of patience on days with shifting weather conditions. If the dunes are holding a bit of surface moisture from a morning mist or light drizzle, sometimes we just need the sun to come out and start doing its magic. A brief window of sunlight can dry out the top powder layer quickly, dramatically improving the glide and completely transforming the speed of your ride.

The Overnight Moisture & Aborted Activity Policy
If sandboarding is actively attempted in good faith—but overnight mist, condensation, or heavy morning sea fog has left the dunes just a bit too damp for a functional glide—the guide holds ultimate authority to abort the activity on-site in the interest of guest experience.

Because transport services (if your booking included round-trip transportation from and back to your hotel) and strict park entry permits are fully utilized the moment guests enter the reserve, these operational costs are entirely non-refundable. However, to fair-share the disappointment of an unsuccessful slide, the remaining portion (the standard activity fee) will be refundable.

Pick-Up & Transport Information

⚠️ Please Note: This section is only applicable to guests who have booked this activity with transport included. If you booked the self-drive option, please follow your specific arrival instructions.

• No Central Meeting Point: For most scheduled tours/tour with transport included, there is no central meeting point. If pick-up transfers are included in your package/for your trip, we will collect you directly from your accommodation.
• Included Radius: Included pick-up applies to any street address within a 5 km radius of Cape Town city centre for our Cape region tours. Additional costs will apply for colloctions outside this pick-up radius.
• Pick-Up Window: Morning collection generally takes place between 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM. Please note that your exact time is subject to change based on the total number of collections scheduled for that day.
• Pick-Up Time Confirmation: Our operations team finalizes the most efficient transit route the day before departure. A Cape Xtreme consultant will reach out to you directly during the day or afternoon prior to your tour to confirm your exact collection time.
• Travel Arrangements & End Times: Because this is a scheduled group tour, there is no fixed start and/or finish time. Changing weather and traffic conditions can shift our timeline, so we strongly advise that you do not schedule flights or time-sensitive arrangements for after your tour.

Cancellation / Refund Policy

GENERAL/STANDARD CANCELLATION POLICY
Please be advised that the cancellation fee & refund percentage (%) is applicable to the TOTAL tour/activity price LESS a less 5% transaction fee in the case of online or POS card transactions made for payment. This represents a direct bank processing cost and is not a revenue-generating charge.

Cancellation or changes:

• 15 days or more prior to tour date = 100% Refund
• 14-4 days prior to tour date = 50% Refund
• 3-0 days prior to tour date, late arrivals or “NO-SHOWS” = 0%/No Refund

❗️Late arrivals and/or no-shows for a tour/activity/time slot, regardless of the reason, unfortunately forfeit the full booking. Similar to booking an airline ticket; the plane will not wait for any passenger that is late. Please ensure you are on time for your booking.
❗️All transaction/transfer fees and/or forex conversion costs charged by the banks during the refund process will be billed to you (the client/booking holder)
❗️Refund and credit values are calculated in our local ZAR (South African Rand) currency. Transaction values in your own currency could be affected due to bank fees and currency exchange fluctuations.
