Experience Overview

Explore False Bay from a unique water-based perspective and experience a safe, guided 7 km sea kayaking tour. This excursion offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view rare marine creatures in their natural habitat.

The journey begins at the Simon's Town Jetty with an introduction to paddling and a comprehensive safety briefing. Participants will glide past the civilian and Naval Harbours for an up-close look at various large vessels before heading out into the open water. The primary destination is the iconic Boulders Beach, home to the largest land-based colony of African Penguins. Along the route, kayakers traverse shallow gullies teeming with marine life, with the chance to experience a brief swim from the kayak if time and tidal conditions permit.

Critical Arrival & Logistical Instructions

Because the kayak trips runs on a tight daily schedule with subsequent trips booked, punctuality is absolute.

  • Arrival Window: You are required to arrive at the stables strictly 30 minutes before your scheduled ride time. This buffer is essential to handle mandatory check-in steps, including completing indemnity waivers, conducting safety briefings, and allocating kayaks. For example, if your session is booked for 11:00 AM, you must be on-site and ready by 10:30 AM.
  • Lateness Consequences: If you are late, you risk missing your trip completely. Your booking will be marked as a non-refundable "no-show" and your fees will be forfeited.
  • Location Warning: You must go straight to the meeting location in Simon's Town. Do not go to Maitland / Cape Xtreme's offices. You will be at the wrong location and you will miss your booking/forfeit your booking entirely (no refund/reschedule).
  • Time Slot Availability: Your selected time slot is a preference and is not guaranteed at the time of submission. Once we receive your request/booking, we will check availability and confirm your slot. We will either send over your official confirmation or immediately contact you with alternative times or dates if your preferred slot is not available.

Inclusions & Exclusions

  • What’s Included: Stable two-person sit-on-top sea kayaks and professional guiding services.
  • What’s Excluded: Round-trip transport (hotel pickup & drop off), meals, snacks, refreshments, all items of a personal nature.

What to Wear & Bring

  • Summer Attire (Sept – Apr): Shorts, a T-shirt, a brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Winter Attire (May – Aug): Long trousers (such as tracksuit bottoms), a warm sweater, or a windbreaker. Synthetic, quick-dry activewear is heavily recommended over cotton or denim.
  • Footwear: You can participate barefoot. If you prefer footwear, strap-on sports sandals are ideal; avoid flip-flops as they easily float away in moving water.
  • Essential Supplies: Pack a bottle of drinking water, a light snack, a towel, and a full change of dry clothing for after the tour.
  • Valuables & Photography: You will get wet on this trip. The guides regularly carry cameras to photograph your session for their social media pages. Personal phones or small cameras are brought entirely at your own risk. Protective, waterproof mobile phone pouches are available to purchase on-site for R200 each (cash only).

Fleet Dynamics & Marine Wildlife

  • The Kayaks: The tour utilizes incredibly stable, two-person sit-on-top kayaks. These craft prevent the constricted feeling of sit-inside models, making absolute beginners feel immediately at ease. Flipping over is highly unlikely, and the kayaks are very easy to climb back onto.
  • Group Caps & Odd Numbers: The operator maintains 10 double kayaks, capping tours at 20 people maximum. Larger groups are split into alternating legs. Solo travelers or odd-numbered parties will be comfortably paired up with a guide or another guest.
  • Potential Wildlife Sightings: While nature offers no absolute guarantees, the high visibility provides an excellent chance to encounter:
    ‣ African Penguin
    ‣ Cape Fur seal
    ‣ Cormorants (4 species)
    ‣ Black oyster catcher
    ‣ Seagulls (obviously)
    ‣ Fish (yes, the visibility is mad)
    ‣ Good looking guides (guaranteed, obviously)
    ‣ Sea star/starfish (low tide mostly)
    ‣ Octopus (if you’re lucky)
    ‣ Octopus eaten by seal (if you’re very lucky)
    ‣ Whales, mostly in whale season (Humpback, Southern Right, Bryde’s Whale, Orca)
    ‣ Sunfish (if you’re wide awake)
    ‣ Smaller shark species, but very rare
    ‣ Dolphins
    ‣ Baboons

Safety Rules & Participant Requirements

  • Indemnity Waivers: All participants must sign on-site safety waivers/indemnity to partake in the activity. Guests under 18 years old require a parent or legal guardian to sign on their behalf.
  • Age Limits: Participants must be at least 8 years old. Children under 9 are not strong paddlers, meaning the accompanying adult must be prepared to do the majority of the paddling work.
  • Weight Restrictions: The maximum weight limit per individual is 120 kg. Additionally, each double kayak has a combined maximum capacity of 200 kg total for both paddlers.
  • Fitness Profile: A high level of physical fitness is not required. If you are capable of completing a basic one-hour walk or can stand up from the ground without assistance, you can easily participate.
  • The Strenuous Exception: The tour only becomes physically strenuous during high winds. Under severe wind conditions, standard tours are canceled.
